M-B COMEDY #192: IMMIGRANT STORIES W/ COMEDY AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

  • The Making-Box 43 Cork Street East Guelph, ON, N1H 2W8 Canada (map)

In an era of increasing xenophobia, where politicians stoke fears of “the other”, Comedy as a Second Language seeks to humanize immigrants and, by joking about our differences, remind us of our similarities.

CSL gives a platform to voices that aren’t normally heard, talking about experiences that might not otherwise be shared, and we hope that by simply exposing the public to these stories and getting them to laugh along with us, it will serve as inoculation against bigotry. By demonstrating that immigrants are just regular people with similar struggles, wants, and problems, we can break down walls, and maybe, just maybe, keep them from going up in the first place.

THE PERFORMERS:

Carol Zoccoli - Carol is a comedian and writer from Brazil where she was a cast member on Saturday Night Live Brazil and had her own Comedy Central specials. Since immigrating to North America, Carol has graduated from Second City's Conservatory Program and has been regularly performing stand-up, in both English and Portuguese, for the better part of a decade. She has been seen on stage at the Halifax Comedy Festival, JFL42, Laughing Skull in Atlanta, and the NBC Breakout Festival in Chicago.

Leonard Chan - A comedian and writer, Leonard performs stand-up from coast to coast. He has been heard on CBC's The DebatersLaugh Out Loud, and Sirius/XM radio, published on CBC Comedy and the Beaverton, and seen on stage at JFL42, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, and the Halifax Comedy Festival. He was one of five finalists invited to pitch his television series at the CBC Originals Stand Up and Pitch competition at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. He also has two degrees in engineering which he now uses only as punchlines.

Hisham Kelati - Hisham Kelati is a comedy writer and stand-up comic from Toronto, known for his vivid and engaging storytelling, that ranges from family-friendly stories (about his African mom!) to weird and wild drug tales (not about his African mom!). He’s written and starred in sketches for Herb and CBC Comedy, performed on JFL42, CBC LOL, NXNE, The Nubian Show and most recently opened for Saturday Night Live’s Chris Redd.
