After two years of pop-up comedy shows and improv classes in a hidden room on Baker Street, The Making-Box is officially set to launch Guelph’s first storefront comedy theatre and improv training centre at 43 Cork St. E on September 1st. This month-long grand opening celebration marks the start of a new season of Friday night comedy shows, a new semester of improv classes and the physical realization of a flourishing community of Guelphites building community through comedy.
Who the heck?
Chances are you’ve seen Kevin's loveable face. Aside from multiple Gemini Awards, Emmy nominations and writing and acting credits in Kids in the Hall, he’s had guest roles in That 70’s Show, Seinfeld, Friends and Arrested Development. You also might recognize his voice in the Lilo and Stitch movies, or animated shows Catscratch and The Angry Beavers.
Friday, Sept 1 - 8:30PM: Half a Play (Show)
Once upon a time, Kevin wrote half a play. He didn’t get much farther than that. Since then, he’s been bringing this half-written beauty to comedy theatres across the continent. Joined by members of the The Making-Box Brigade (our house improv ensemble), Kevin will act out the first half of the play and improvise the second. The results are sure to be messy and unquestionably hilarious.
Saturday, Sept 2 - 10AM to 6PM: Sketch Creation w/ Kevin MacDonald (Full-Day Workshop)
Students will taste the secret spice of Kids in the Hall sketches firsthand. Kevin will share how to use improv and other methods to write audience-ready sketches. In fact, we’re so sure your sketches will be audience-ready, you’ll be performing your creations as part of a showcase that evening.
Saturday, Sept 2 - 8:30PM: Kevin McDonald Sketch Showcase
This evening begins with 30 minutes of stand up from Kevin McDonald. After this, he’ll introduce the students from the workshop above and have them perform their freshly-baked sketches. Kevin will then perform an improv set with The Making-Box Brigade. Pro tip: if you take the workshop, you won’t need to buy a ticket for what’s sure to be a one-of-a-kind show.
